We went to monitor an 'albatross friendly fishery' as we are used to saying in Brazil. The longliner 'Falcom I' had already implemented and used tori lines, but on this trip the goal was to introduce the use of blue-dyed bait.

During Spring on the oceanic islands, albatrosses are being born! The same is happening with the Albatross Task Force! New members are joining in order to maintain the oceanic species diversity.

In November, the skipper Dinho from the longline vessel Quebra-Mar brought a dead, ringed Tristan albatross which was captured at latitudes 35o 27 Longitude 32o 54 during the 10th set. The skipper used the blue-dyed bait, but the dye had run out during the previous set; in addition, the albatross was captured on a full moon.

At this time of the year it is very dangerous to sail here in the South Atlantic. To make you know how bad it is to navigate, when the FV Oceano Brasil reached the fishing area, and we started to fish, the wind changed its direction. So, we did the hauling facing a sea with Force 7 (Beaufort Scale) with huge waves.

I've been at sea for 20 days. I have so much news to tell! We left Santos and sailed to the Brazilian south coast. The sea conditions were so calm they permitted me to contemplate the beautiful days and sunsets during two days of sailing it took until we reached the fishing area.

In the beginning of April, we organised a course... 35 students came from several universities from Santos and other Brazilian states in order to be capable to support the Albatross Task Force (ATF) job in different ports.
Friday 6 April
As the summer is not a good time to observe birds here in Brazil, I have been preparing the vessels to start to test the bird scaring lines (tori lines).
Tuesday 31 October
It's time to rock and find out how well we're doing. I am preparing to go onboard the very first Brazilian Albatross Task Force research vessel.
