Standards compliance

All web pages produced for the Save the Albatross website are written to the XHTML 1.0 Transitional standard, use Cascading Style Sheets for presentation and aim to meet the ‘AA’ conformance level of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. This means that the Save the Albatross website can be viewed in all modern browsers, regardless of platform or device.

Some older browsers (eg Internet Explorer 4 and Netscape 4) do not comply with these web standards. A minority of our visitors still use these browsers and, as a result, will not experience the site as we have intended. They will be able to read the pages and navigate the site, but the site will look basic in comparison.

Text size

If you find that the text is too small for you to read, you can change it to a size that you are more comfortable with:

  • in Internet Explorer (PC), use the View, Text Size menu
  • in Netscape 6 or 7 and Internet Explorer (Mac), use the View, Text Zoom menu

Access keys

Most web browsers support shortcuts called access keys that you can use to jump to specific areas of the site. If your browser supports them, press alt=""+ key (Windows) or CTRL + key (Macintosh) and then (in the case of links) Enter to use.

We follow the standard access keys as defined by the UK Government:

  • 1 - Link to homepage
  • 2 - Main content of this page
  • 0 - Link to accessibility statement

Privacy

The Save the Albatross campaign (administrated by BirdLife International and the RSPB) is committed to protecting your privacy and security. Whenever you provide personal information, we will treat that information in accordance with this policy, current UK Data Protection legislation and Internet best practice.

Data protection

You can use almost all the features of this site without disclosing any personal information. A few optional features of this site, such as donations and email sign up forms, ask you to provide some personal information (eg name and address, e-mail address). This information will be used only by BirdLife International and their country partners (the RSPB in the UK) - we never sell your details to anyone else.

BirdLife International and their country partners (the RSPB in the UK) will share your details to update you about Albatross Task Force and their conservation, campaigning and fundraising work.

We will analyse information gathered from the website in an effort to determine which communications are most effective, to reduce administration costs and increase funds available for conservation.

If we wish to use your personal information for an additional purpose, we will always ask you to agree at the point of collection. If you have already supplied us with personal information, you can change your instructions at any time.

Users aged under 16

If you are aged under 16, please ensure you obtain your parent/guardian's consent before sending any personal information to this website. Please note that the Save the Albatross campaign will not accept online donations or orders for services from persons aged under 16 years.

Financial security

All Save the Albatross website forms which request credit card or bank details use the SSL (secure sockets layer) protocol for encryption. Most browsers (including current versions of Microsoft Explorer and Netscape Navigator) support SSL. The link between your browser and the server is secure if your browser displays a small padlock or key symbol somewhere in the frame, or the address bar shows a web address beginning 'https://' (rather than http://).

Links to third party websites

The Save the Albatross website contains hyperlinks to many other websites. This information is supplied in good faith, in case it is of interest or use to Save the Albatross website users. The Save the Albatross campaign administrators (BirdLife International and the RSPB) are not responsible for the content or functionality of any of these external websites. Visitors to the Save the Albatross website should be aware of the following:

* If an external website requests personal information from you (eg in connection with an order for goods or services), this information is supplied to, stored and used by the company concerned - it is not covered by the Save the Albatross campaign’s Data Protection Statement. It is good practice to read the privacy policy of any website at which you are considering registering any personal information.

In purchasing goods or services from any of the companies to which the Save the Albatross site links, you are forming a contract with the company(s) concerned (agreeing to their terms and conditions), not the Save the Albatross site.
